What is E-Stim?
This therapy uses electrical pulses that targets certain muscles to make them contract. By making them contract repeatedly blood flow will improve helping repair injured muscles. E-Stim can also help to block pain receptors that are being sent from the nerves to the brain. There are two main types of E-Stim:
T.E.N.S.
This type of unit is used to treat chronic and acute pain. The term chronic pain is pain lasting long-term. The term acute pain is pain lasting short-term. Electrodes are placed near the source of the pain. When the machine is on signals are sent to the nerves to block or reduce the pain signals being sent to your brain. At Manasota Accident and Injury we use TENS units on our patients that have been injured in a car accident because it is extremely effective in treating pain. Many of our patients find relief in this therapy.
EMS
This unit has a stronger current than the TENS unit and is used to get muscles to contract. EMS E-Stim is best uses to strengthen muscles and get blood flow back into the muscles.
