Chiropractic adjustments are a safe and practical way to receive on-the-go treatment for a variety of physical and neurological ailments. Whether you’re experiencing slight, unexplainable discomfort or acute pain stemming from a traumatic accident, chiropractic adjustments can be used to help mitigate pain, correct misalignment, and improve patient health on a holistic level. Best of all, chiropractic adjustments can be integrated into your preventative health plan to protect you against the wear and tear of daily life.
Consider this: 43 percent of adults in the United States who were treated with chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation did so for general wellness or disease prevention. That means they were able to experience the benefits of chiropractic care firsthand and decided to continue using it to promote their overall wellness! Patients have also reported that they have sought chiropractic care to improve their energy level, strengthen their immune system, and increase cognitive abilities.
At Manasota Accident and Injury Center, we specialize in treating patients that have been dealt a bad hand while on the road. No one expects to be involved in a car crash, but it can happen to anyone. How Chiropractors Manipulate the Spine
Chiropractors manipulate the spine using various devices and controlled thrusts to correct misalignment and provide relief for patient’s suffering from chronic pain. Depending on the patient’s condition, which will be diagnosed with a physical exam and x-ray imaging, the chiropractor will apply force to the joint in a specific direction. Over time, this can help the patient heal without the need for surgery or medication — and all of the risks and complications associated with these treatments.
The Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments
As a patient, it’s important to relax and allow yourself to trust your chiropractor when receiving treatment. Most chiropractors have performed chiropractic adjustments on hundreds of patients, and many chiropractors treat patients starting as young as the age of two, sometimes even earlier. Chiropractors follow a series of methodical procedures to safely manipulate the spine. The patient will first be asked to lay face down on the adjustment table. This position allows the spine to rest evenly, making the process of adjusting the patient’s spinal muscles and vertebrae less difficult. By following your chiropractor’s instructions closely, you can fully realize the many benefits of chiropractic adjustments, including:
- Safe, dependable treatment backed by well-documented results
- Performed in a relaxed setting where doctor and patient can connect on a personal level
- Benefits joint mobility and function
- Improves muscle contraction
- Promotes faster healing times
- Effective at treating acute pain in the back, neck pain, and headaches
- May provide relief for osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia
- Helps to resolve prenatal discomfort

What Medical Conditions Can Chiropractors Help Treat?
Chiropractic care is highly effective for treating a broad range of conditions. And it isn’t used exclusively to treat physical injuries. A large portion of chiropractic care is centered around the spinal cord, which contains the central nervous system. It is because of our spinal cord that we are able to move, function, and feel. Therefore, conditions affecting the spine can affect neurological health in addition to physical health. Some conditions that can be treated with the help of an experienced chiropractor include:
- Asthma
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Bell’s Palsy (Facial Palsy)
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Chronic Back, Neck, or Thoracic Pain
- Crohn’s Disease
- Epilepsy
- Fibromyalgia
- Forward Head Posture
- Gastroesophageal Reflux
- Headaches
- Herniated Disc
- High Blood Pressure
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Osteoarthritis
- Otitis Media
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Prenatal Pain
- Radiculopathy
- Stress
- Spinal Alignment
- Subluxation
- Vertigo and Balance Issues
- Whiplash

Are There Risks to Chiropractic Adjustments?
Chiropractic adjustments are considered a safe alternative to medicine and surgery; however, patients should note that only a trained and licensed practitioner should be allowed to perform chiropractic adjustments. It’s normal to experience muscle soreness, stiffness, or pain following an adjustment. These symptoms are temporary and will dissipate in 1-2 days following the adjustment. More serious risks include artery tears, which have been linked to chiropractic adjustments in the cervical region. These tears, which are known as cervical artery dissections (CAD), can cause a person to have a stroke. The risk of CAD is low, but the potential consequences can be devastating.
Spinal manipulation isn’t for everyone. Individuals with osteoporosis, spinal cord compression, inflammatory arthritis, or who are currently prescribed or taking blood thinners may not be good candidates for spinal manipulation. At the very least, they should discuss chiropractic care with their primary medical provider prior to receiving treatment.
What Should You Do After Your Chiropractic Adjustment?
After your adjustment comes to an end, you will rise up from your side to avoid destabilization of the joints in your pelvis. Give the adjusted regions some time to heal. Don’t poke or prod them, and don’t twist your abdomen or make other, similarly sharp movements. Once you return home, you can take part in mild to moderate physical activities. Focus on smooth movements that help you stretch. You don’t want to put too much stress on your spine. Your chiropractor may recommend yoga, pilates, physical therapy, or some other form of physical activity that won’t interfere with the success of your treatment.
Finally, be alert for soreness and discomfort, but don’t overreact. Describe how you feel accurately at follow-up appointments. This will allow your chiropractor to tweak your adjustment to better suit your needs. And remember, you can always contact the experienced team at Manasota Accident and Injury Center with any questions you may have following your treatment.
